A Spotlight on District 1 Businesses & Entrepreneurs

Gifted Hands Embroidery

We are proud to celebrate Gifted Hands Embroidery, a true gem in District 1. As a recipient of the D1 grant through the Penny Foundation, Gifted Hands Embroidery continues to make a positive impact with their custom embroidery services, helping local businesses and residents bring their creative visions to life.

The Link Entrepreneur and Training Center

As a new addition to District 1, we are thrilled to introduce The Link Entrepreneur and Training Center. Owners not only renovated the facility into an event space and community incubator, they provide individuals with tools and resources to build profitable and sustainable businesses.

Xclusive Printing

Xclusive Printing a proud District 1 business offering quality, vibrant prints and graphic designs. Owners Timeka Garrick and Eric Garrick, Jr. grew up in the Huffman area and give back to their community through incredible work. Hear their story and see why they’re a business to watch.

Joiner Fire Sprinkler

Black History Month, we were proud to spotlight Joiner Fire Sprinkler, a Black-owned business that’s been safeguarding lives and properties for 30 years. As one of the largest fire suppression companies in the state, their story isn’t just about business—it’s about resilience, excellence, and breaking barriers.

Workforce Spotlight: Larry Thornton

We had the honor of sitting alongside Larry Thornton—Coca-Cola executive, Birmingham’s first Black McDonald’s franchisee, and author of Why Not Win?—and his son for a powerful conversation about his impact on our community and the importance of workforce development. His story isn’t just about success; it’s about breaking barriers, creating workforce opportunities, and showing our community what’s possible.

Exclusive Choice Barbershop

Have you stopped by Exclusive Choice Barbershop yet? One of District 1’s newest businesses, this 100% women-owned and operated shop is already making its mark on Center Point Parkway. From offering free back-to-school cuts for kids to bringing fresh energy to the local barbershop scene, owner Isha Jones is a shining example of drive, dedication, and community spirit.

Sarah's Event Center

Family-owned and operated, Sarah’s Event Center is more than a catering, restaurant, and event space — it’s a gift to our community. Known for their warm and welcoming atmosphere, customers often say it feels “like grandmother’s house.” From baby showers to class reunions, Sarah’s has become a trusted place for Birmingham residents and visitors to gather, celebrate, and make lasting memories. And with a staff that treats every guest like family, it’s no wonder this space has become a beloved resource.
